"My current work is focused on discovering unique ways to apply metal to other materials such as Shell and Wood. My work incorporates designs and symbolism you would find in each of my tribes as well as materials used. I am also a big advocate in reclaiming and decolonizing forgotten or taken images, one of which is the Whirling Log.
The Images and designs I use all have meaning and stories behind them which accompanies each piece and helps connect the wearer to the jewelry. The materials I use are just as important as any of the symbols or designs used because it also tells a story of trade routes and specific geographic materials important to my people i.e., Turquoise, Corals and Shells. I use those materials in respect to my tribal traditions, but I also love to incorporate other beautiful gems and materials as well." -Rykelle Kemp (Artist Statement)
